Pilgrim walking the Danish coast
Plan your walk

Before you set out.

A few simple things to know before your first day on the Northern Pilgrim Way.

When to walk

The classic season is May through September. Walpurgis Night (30 April) and Midsummer Eve (23 June) are the most symbolic dates, traditionally associated with the holy spring.

What to bring

Sturdy shoes, a light tent or bivy, a sleeping bag rated for Danish summer nights, a water bottle, basic cooking gear, weather-proof clothing, your passport — and as little else as you can manage.

Where to sleep

Pilgrim camps every 20–25 km, plus traditional shelters along Denmark's national trail network. No hotels are required, though pilgrims are welcome to use them.

How to navigate

GPX downloads for every route. Signposting along key sections. Detailed stage maps in the Pilgrim Passport. Phone reception across most of the country.

Water and food

Drinking water at every camp. Bakeries and shops in most villages. Fresh fish and smoked specialties along the coast. Carry one full day of food at a minimum.

Safety and respect

Walk in pairs where possible. Respect private land. Leave no trace at camps. Be quiet in churches and at sacred sites. In emergencies, call 112.
